VIRAL East African Higher Education Institution Network

Importance of the HEI network
The Viral team will upgrade the current plant pathology study programmes with the up-to-date technologies and knowledge on university pedagogy, imaging tools for disease detection and higher education in plant pathology. All materials will be generated in online deliverable format with the aim of small-scale accreditation utilizing platforms like the FAO e-learning Academy.

RESULTS & SUSTAINABILITY
Representatives from the 8 universities are now starting the 3-year Erasmus + CBHE project. The project will run from 2025 till 2027 but the generated material will remain available on an online repository.
Countries involved: Finland, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Spain

Background and general objectives
The overarching aim of the VIRAL project is to promote uptake of digital skills by students and teachers of Plant Pathology study programmes in partner HEIs for enhanced disease detection and management.
East African HEI network
The “East African HEI network” will be established by the six partner universities from Kenya (Nairobi), Tanzania (Morogoro, Dar es Salaam) and Uganda (Kampala, Busitema). The network will create new Regional Digital Plant Pathology Study Modules to promote digitization and modernization of Plant Pathology education.
